as per my last email is an original mixed-media artwork and a study of La Belle Dame sans Merci by Frank Dicksee, reinterpreted through thousands of hand-cut paint-chip pixels.
The piece depicts a Pre-Raphaelite knight in a moment of beautiful, theatrical exhaustion, gazing upward with absolutely no will left to continue. Naturally, this made it the ideal image through which to explore the emotional experience of receiving a work email.
Created using 432 individual colors and approximately 8,000 hand-cut paint-chip squares, the work transforms a historic painting into a contemporary meditation on fatigue, obligation, professional correspondence, and the quiet devastation of being asked to circle back.
Each paint-chip pixel is individually cut and mounted by hand on 3 mm aluminium Dibond using museum-grade archival adhesive, creating a detailed surface that sits somewhere between painting, mosaic, and digital image.
Measuring 81.5 × 101.6 cm, the artwork includes an approx. 5 mm border around the composition, designed to be hidden by framing.
