this could have been an email. is an original mixed-media artwork and a study of Helen of Troy by Frederick Sandys, reinterpreted through thousands of hand-cut paint-chip pixels.
A cropped eye from a famously beautiful face, this piece is a tribute to all the pointless meetings that somehow require everyone’s presence, several coffees, a lot of talking, and absolutely no clear outcome.
Created using 213 individual colors and approximately 2,000 hand-cut paint-chip squares, the work transforms a historic painting into a contemporary meditation on beauty, escalation, bureaucracy, and the very specific exhaustion of watching something simple become unnecessarily complicated.
Each paint-chip pixel is individually cut and mounted by hand on 3 mm aluminium Dibond using museum-grade archival adhesive, creating a detailed surface that sits somewhere between painting, mosaic, and digital image.
Measuring 40 × 50 cm, the artwork includes an approx. 5 mm border around the composition, designed to be hidden by framing.
