clearly, i did not think this through is an original mixed-media artwork and a study of Chivalry by Frank Dicksee, reinterpreted through thousands of hand-cut paint-chip pixels.
The piece was inspired by a near-death experience involving a deeply unstable German man, and by the artist’s lifelong, unwavering commitment to poor risk assessment.
Created using 409 individual colors and approximately 4,500 hand-cut paint-chip squares, the work transforms a historic painting into a contemporary meditation on danger, hindsight, questionable instincts, and the very specific clarity that arrives shortly after doing exactly the wrong thing.
Each paint-chip pixel is individually cut and mounted by hand on 3 mm aluminium Dibond using museum-grade archival adhesive, creating a detailed surface that sits somewhere between painting, mosaic, and digital image.
Measuring 61.46 × 76.57 cm, the artwork includes an approx. 5 mm border around the composition, designed to be hidden by framing.
